Did Atletico Just Hand Over La Liga To Their Ultimate Rival?

1 July, 2020 by Sahar Ajjab

The race to La Liga title is getting tighter everyday. The classic rivalry between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, is a trending topic all over the world. Furthermore, and after a two-month break due to Coronavirus, the much-anticipated return of football may have just gotten more exciting. While Real Madrid is holding on to the top position of the table with 71 points, the 2 points difference with Barcelona requires both teams to give their all. Yet, Atletico de Madrid, who considers Los Blancos as their ultimate rival, are making it easier for their neighbor.

Barcelona Couldn’t Sweep The 3 Points At Home

The Catalan team was unable to sweep the win of Atletico at Camp Nou. In fact, the polemic game is currently going viral on social media. Fans are triggered by the 3 penalties that were behind the main goals of the match. Not only that A crazy match that Atlético equalized shortly after a penalty from Saúl, who scored after a failed attempt by Diego Costa. In fact, the referee considered that the German keeper Ter Stegan wasn’t in the correct position, so he was yellow-carded.

However, what really matters after this fixture is that Barcelona couldn’t lower the point difference with Real Madrid, and lost a big opportunity in the race to the title.

That being said, this doesn’t have to be the end for Barcelona’s chances. In fact, the 5 remaining games of the season will be crucial to determine the late-winner. Moreover, Real Madrid are going on a visit to San Mames in Bilbao, to face a tough challenge against Athletic. That on the other hand, could be the Whites’ chance to reach their goal, and win their 34th Liga title, after two years of hard luck.

The Video Assistant Referee technique was introduced in football in 2016, to ”regulate” the game. However, according to many football followers, it’s not serving that purpose. So, is VAR making football better or worse? And better yet, did VAR make it easier for Real Madrid to get ahead in points this season? Most teams benefited from the VAR over the past years, but it’s undoubtedly been more in favor of bigger teams. In fact, some may even get to say that it supports a hidden agenda, empowered by money and how it shapes the football sphere.
