Running is a great exercise that provides numerous health benefits. Nevertheless, the sad but true reality is that going on long runs, be it in small towns, parks, or big cities, does pose a potential threat particularly for females. This is not to scare you from enjoying a run outside! Rather, this is to keep you safe so that you can soak up the sun and fresh air during your cardio session. The following are safety precautions to take before, during and after your run.
Form Fitting Style
Apart from causing more drag while running, wearing baggy clothing like heavy hooded sweatshirts makes it easier for any potential threat to grab you. By wearing form fitting clothes like compression leggings and running jackets, you are less of a target (and can also run more easily!) Same goes for hair- if you have long hair, a side or french braid is your safest option.
Jog With A Friend
Running solo can be relaxing and a great way to meditate, but running with a friend is a safe alternative that is also fun and motivating. Having a buddy by your side is also important in case you get lost or fall on a run, as they can easily and quickly offer aid.
Switch Up Your Routine
Although having a routine is great for keeping you on track to achieving your goals, to prevent boredom and keep you safe you should switch up your running routine. Try different routes at varying times of the day so that no one has the potential to “follow your path.”
Choose Well-Lit Paths
Whether running along neighborhood streets or on trails, it’s important to follow a route that is safe and well-lit. If there are many trees around, try sticking to the middle of the path to be away from any areas that are hidden.
Finish With Sprints
Rather than go for a light jog to finish your run, try sprinting the final stretch. This will help train your body to push through the pain and exhaustion if ever someone starts to chase you on a run.
Cross-Train Your Upper Body
Cross-training is vital to be all around in better shape, but for runners it is especially important to do some targeted arm exercises. Weightlifting, TRX bands and swimming are all great ways of working your upper body. Your arms will get strong and toned, which can help you better fight off an attacker if the rare need ever arises. The likelihood of something bad to happen while on a run is slim, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry!
